For horse lovers, Barbaro’s battle for survival after his catastrophic Preakness breakdown was a profile in courage. When we learned of his euthanasia, we brought back a “best of” program from 2006. Dr. Hank Vaupel is a 1967 graduate of the Michigan State University School of Veterinary Medicine. He’s an unabashed equine enthusiast, a founding member of the Michigan Equine Partnership, and is on the Board of Directors of Canter a non profit organization dedicated to training and finding homes for retired race horses. Hank gave us a detailed picture of what caused Barbaro’s accident and what was done to save his life.
