One of MSU‘s best friends is WJR morning host Paul W. Smith.

“My job as I see it is to try to accentuate the positive,” Smith tells Michigan State University President Lou Anna K. Simon and Spartans Athletic Director Mark Hollis. “I have a positive and upbeat view of our state.”

Paul says he and erstwhile executive producer and Spartans alumna Ann Thomas sometimes come in to the studio in the morning with a stack of stuff to get to on the air “but we don’t get to any of it.” Smith says he and Thomas want their show to be “the first stop for the last word in what’s going on.”

Smith strives to be fair and gives all sides of issues a chance to engage with his audience. “I’ve tried to hone the art disagreeing without being disagreeable.”

Simon, Hollis and Smith also touch on our divided government, the battle for new roads in Michigan, Spartan Dan Gilbert‘s “Webward” activity in Detroit, and the University Research Corridor.

Both Simon and Smith comment that anywhere and everywhere they go in the world, people know well of both Michigan State University and the University of Michigan and hold them both in high regard.

“Our universities strive to create the magic for the future, not just the magic of what’s happening on our campuses today,” adds Simon.

“I love Michigan, and I love what I do,” says Smith. “I’m blessed and lucky to do what I do.

“I hate getting up at four in the morning. But once my feet hit the floor, there hasn’t been a time in over 44 years that I didn’t want to get up and go to work.”
