Spartans hockey coach Tom Anastos says “my mind is racing, frankly” as he gets his team ready for Big Ten hockey this season.

“It’s going to be an incredible challenge, and Big Ten hockey can’t come soon enough,” he tells Michigan State University President Lou Anna K. Simon and Spartans Athletic Director Mark Hollis on MSU Today.

MSU will seek to retain in-state rivals on its non-conference schedule while developing series with high-profile national programs, too, Anastos says.

Tom says it was great to hear “Michigan State” so often during Stanley Cup games this seasons as Torey Krug, Duncan Keith and other Spartans helped their teams advance.

“It’s a necessary evil” Anastos says, that he and his fellow college hockey coaches have to recruit younger and younger players now. “It’s a bit of a gamble as some of these kids haven’t even matured yet.”

Anastos talks about his role on college hockey’s rules committee and expects his team to take a step up next season.

Anastos’ advice to all is to “find your passion.”

When you do, he says, “you make yourself an incredible asset to anyone around you.”
