“When we hired Mark Dantonio we believe we hired a man of great character who was committed to building a program of national stature to go with our academic programs, and I think he’s doing that,” MSU President Lou Anna K. Simon tells Paul W. Smith on WJR the morning of December 9. 2013.

The Spartans beat Ohio State on December 7 to win the Big Ten football championship and advance to play Stanford in the 2014 Rose Bowl on New Year’s Day.

President Simon addresses the unrest in the streets of East Lansing that followed the Big Ten championship game. She tells Paul W that MSU will aggressively go after individuals who “have shown enormous disrespect for Michigan State and for this community.”

President Simon stresses that there were many more positive celebrations and that only “a few jerks impacted the way people see Spartans celebrating, and it’s something we take very seriously.”
