schmidt.jpgFrom MSU Today on Impact Radio: Bill Schmidt is a University Distinguished Professor of counseling, educational psychology and special education at MSU. He directed a study titled Mathematics Teaching in the 21st Century.

Schmidt found that middle school math teachers in the United States are not as well prepared to teach this subject compared to teachers in five other countries, something that could negatively affect the U.S. as it continues to compete on an international scale.

Schmidt details the findings and discusses possible policy implications of the research. And he says a new study has just begun – Teacher Education and Development Study in Mathematics – which expands the research to include 19 countries and will look at the preparation of elementary and middle school teachers.
