Ben Bixby is a front-end web developer in the College of Agriculture and Natural Resources at Michigan State University. According to Ben, his interest in the field began at a young age. “I started really kind of learning and experimenting when I was 15, 16 years old. Back then, it was Dreamweaver and so on. Now, I have certain integrated development environments that help me write certain things. Pretty much it’s in a text editor now and really it’s the bulk of my work.”
As a youngster, a big decision in Ben’s life revolved around a dirt bike and set his career path in motion. “It was either go to Disney World or go and get a dirt bike and then take it back up to our cabin in Northern California. That’s where I first started riding motorcycles, which in turn changed all my focus from soccer to motorcycles. And with that came photography, videos—creating the memories and experiences and wanting to share those.”
At age 16, Bixby left home to cover the motocross circuit and traveled across the United States. “It scared me a little bit. But at the same time, if you want it more than you’re afraid of it, then chances are you’re going to be successful at it.”
Before MSU, Ben was heavily involved in marketing and multimedia production, even owning his own business BIG, Bixby Intelligence Group. His business partner? His brother, Corey. “It’s a tough thing to do and anyone who does it successfully, I applaud them. It’s a lot more difficult, I think, if you’re living and working together, which was the case for us. I look back at all the different things Corey brought to the table and how much I learned from him.”
As for Ben’s ehmpression of MSU—“The interesting thing about Michigan State is you don’t really realize how big it is. Even today, seven months in, I’m learning and I have a little bit of a grasp on who it is that we work with—just how many resources are available to you. Again, whether you’re a student, working for the university, a community member, or a resident of the State of Michigan.”
